Herd Health Fecal Analysis Training

Herd Health Fecal Analysis Training

from 30.00

Introducing the first in our Herd Health Training Series: Fecal Analysis for Goat Farmers!

Our first training class will be at 1 pm on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at our farm in Winterport, Maine. This is our first time offering this training class, so the price is reduced for this date only!! After this class, the price will increase. A discount on purchases of our soap will be available after the class is over.

This technique requires you to have a McMasters Slide. You will not need this slide to complete the training class but will need it when you begin running your own fecals at home. If you would like to leave the training class with your own McMasters slide, choose the option that includes the slide when making your purchase. Otherwise, you can purchase a slide online anytime.

Current veterinary recommendation is to ditch the old-school method of deworming your goats on a rotating schedule and start deworming goats only when their symptoms and/or fecal analysis results indicate that treatment is needed. We have heard that following this recommendation can be cost-prohibitive for some goat farmers if they are paying $10 or more per sample. Following our technique, you will be able to analyze each sample for less than $1. We want to advocate for the health and wellbeing of all goats and feel like we can help make this happen by helping farmers to better manage their herd parasite burden.

Steps included are gathering equipment, preparing the sample, determining the egg-per-gram count for each sample, and cleaning up. We will be running samples as a class to demonstrate. Ample time for questions will be available.

This training class will take place at our farm in Winterport, Maine. We are about 30 minutes from both Bangor and Belfast. We will be teaching this class as long as there is a demand for it. If you would like to request a particular day or time, please let me know and I’ll try to make it happen. For those who do not want to travel to Winterport, I am open to discussing bringing the class to you. We will need to discuss details, but among the most important factors are that there will be a minimum set cost for the class as a whole and you will need to arrange for an appropriate location to host the class.

If you have a microscope that you’d like to bring to class, please do. I will attempt to help you learn how best to use your microscope for this technique to the best of my ability. Some microscopes will not work for this technique and I may not be able to use some microscopes. Your microscope must have a bright light underneath the slide to be able to see the eggs that we are looking for.

This purchase is nonrefundable but can be transferred to a different date. We know that farms sometimes throw curveballs that we have no way of anticipating. We are choosing to be flexible in case that happens to you. However, your purchase cannot be transferred to another person. Each individual in attendance needs to purchase a ticket. The receipt you will receive by email is your ticket for this class. You do not need to bring a printed receipt to the class with you if you are able to access the email in case of a technical glitch.

All classes have a limited number of attendees. We fill the classes on a first come, first served basis. If you have any questions or suggestions, please email us at info@knottygoatsoapery.com or message us on our Facebook page.
